Enjoy tuning in to police broadcasts? Yep, there’s an app for that, too.

Whether you do it as part of your job (crime reporters will find it indispensable), research or crime-fighting responsibilities (assuming you have a superhero identity), Scanner 911 will let you tune in to a huge list of government channels right on your phone.  Using the app, you can listen in on cops responding to reports, dispatchers sending off cars to disturbances and communications from the fire department.  It supports a huge plethora of bands across numerous states, making it a heck of a lot better than working with your decrepit ham radio setup.

The easy-to-use interface lets you access an aggregated list of different channels, organized by city and state.  You can record the audio piping out of the phone, which is pretty awesome when you come across some juicy bits.  A “Near Me” feature lets you tune in to conversations going on in your immediate vicinity. As such, the next time you see police cars congregating down the block, all you have to do is launch the app to check in on what’s going on.

Seriously, anyone who invested in an actual police scanner has to be kicking themselves right now.  I’m not sure how much such a setup costs, but it’s not going to beat Scanner 911’s 99-cent asking price at the App Store.
